I. Wolk Gallery Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley Auberge du Soleil MacArthur Place
The infinitely tranquil landscapes by Wade Hoefer maintain their familiar air, representative of the California landscapes surrounding his Northern California home. At the same time, his paintings extend beyond the boundaries of his environment and into the realm of his imagination. Scenes of lakes, valleys and expansive skies could easily be mistaken for Italy, France, or another rural countryside - shrouded in a misty haze of warm golds, soft greens and defining ochre browns. Illuminated by his skilled rendering of light, Hoefer draws the viewer into the painting. Straying from the tradition of landscape painting, Hoefer's works have a modern edge. His square landscapes are framed with painted broad, mirror-like borders resembling magnified visions of the scenes they encompass. The technique, a painting within a painting is reminiscent of Georges Seurat - who painted matching borders on his works with his pointillist-style. His landscape interiors are far more reminiscent of classical techniques drawn from European Old Masters such as Poussin and Rembrandt. Yet Hoefer has truly simplified his landscapes, omitting humans, or any apparent man made objects - he presents nature in its most complementary serene state.
Hoefer has come to be known through the years as an influential figure in the vast realm of Western landscape painting. Widely exposed throughout the U.S. in major museums and prominent collections, audiences have come to know Hoefer's distinguished style, seeking to grasp that enigmatic aura that his works exude.
