Peter Loftus
Peter Loftus' paintings of the cliffs, rocky shoreline and deep woods on the coast of California are celebrations of the light, the place and of nature. His hope is that people who view his paintings will come away with a sense of the profound beauty of this coast, and will perhaps feel a bit more sympathy for those who are fighting to preserve it.
Indebted to Impressionism, he was originally a traditional "plein-air" painter. His change to large scale canvases carried with it that same warm, bright, broad use of color and technique. Loftus studied painting at the Maryland Institute and received His MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. He moved to Santa Cruz, CA in the late 1970's and served as visiting lecturer in studio art at UC Santa Cruz from 1975 through 1991. His large-scale panoramas of coastal Northern California can be found in many distinguished public and private collections across the US.
