Shapiro’s work is bursts of black calligraphy,
played against colored rectangles, dashing brushwork cut up and
sorted before collaging onto the paintings...rigorous elements in
a kind of East meets West format resulting in strong, bold canvases
that exist on their own terms. He began his career at Northwestern
University and the School of Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. His
career spans 41 years and his dynamic compositions show clear influences
of Motherwell, De Kooning and Hofmann. His paintings are found in
several major public and private collections, as well as important
museums across the U.S.
