Sally Anderson works somewhere between painting
and sculpture. Her
paintings sit on the wall as objects or leave the wall altogether
and occupy their own space. Subject matter does not concern her
and her work is not derivative except by perception or accident.
Each piece is a journey and flows from thirty-five years of gathering
and experimentation with color, texture and form. She works on mylar,
applying layers of acrylic paint, house paint and wax, building
up a surface. She bonds this onto an armature (of board, aluminum
or bronze) and treats the entire piece with a coat of oil and wax,
hand-rubbed to a fine texture. Sally attended Beloit College in
Beloit WA, where she took her BA in Art, the Instituto de Allende
in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and the University of Wisconsin,
where she did her graduate studies. She is the co-founder of Anderson
Contemporary Art in Santa Fe, NM and has exhibited widely throughout
the US and been the recipient of many prestigious awards, including
the National Endowment Grant and First Prize in the New Mexico Biennial.
